56 Department of Design FUKUSHIMA Osamu Born in Hiroshima in 1958. After working at the Katsumi Asaba Design Studio and ADK, established Fukushima Design Ltd. in 1999. He explores and puts into practice the potential of social contribution in design, through work such as the UNICEF Prayer Tree and Handkerchiefs for Tohoku Children . In 2018, in order to realize work style reform for artists with disabilities and welfare facilities, he launched FUKUFUKU+ Co., Ltd., a CSV-style company, with two of his colleagues. He has won more than 30 awards both domestically and internationally, including the International Poster Triennial Toyama Grand Prix and the Cannes International Advertising Festival (now the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity) Gold prize. In preparation for the Paralympics, the number of welfare facilities and organizations carrying out artistic activities is increasing. However, very few people with disabilities are able to create really fascinating art. To the contrary, there are many people who enjoy creative activities even if they’re unable to make appealing art. Ayumu Isomura of FUKUFUKU + was entrusted with a project for developing Shibuya souvenirs with welfare facilities from Shibuya City. We formed a team with students studying design, and observed art activities at welfare facilities. One person happened to draw the alphabet. In the English alphabet, the shapes are simple and the number of letters is small, so I hit on the idea that if a handwritten font were to be made, anyone could participate. Even if we drew while referring to the sample typeface, the fact that we could not draw it accurately created the feel of handwriting all the more, and one after another, unique fonts were created. Today, we have more than 100 typefaces, and we’ve gotten a flood of inquiries from various companies in the wake of receiving the Good Design Award. FUKUFUKU+ Co., Ltd. was founded by Ayumu Isomura, a social entrepreneur, Kei Takahashi, a storyteller, and myself. It is a CSV- style company that generates income support by commercializing the creative activities of people with disabilities. A World’s First!
