The ultimate goal of this study is to design a typeface based on state (Eastern Zhou) bronze script, in particular the bronze script of the ancient state of Cài , as well as to verbalize the design process. State bronze script is a general term for the styles of bronze script that had diversified throughout various parts of the Chinese mainland since the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. Typical samples of bronze script were circulated as stone rubbings, and the impression of the writing style itself was easily influenced by the firm impression of black and white. Deterioration over the years also increased the texture of the materials, the impression of which tends to be perceived as though it were a feature of the style. In order to reproduce the characteristics of the original shapes of the characters themselves as part of a typeface, it is necessary to interpret the forms seen in the materials and to edit or reconstruct their features. In this study, I am working to verbalize this process as much as possible, and to clarify the relationship between the typeface’s characteristics and shapes. In this presentation, I examined how the characteristics of Cài bronze script could be reproduced in the design of a typeface after reinterpreting the dots and strokes of model characters from inscriptions in a wine vessel and platter belonging to a marquis of Cài , and stylizing their shapes and strokes. 12 basic characters to which the style has been applied, and 27 characters expanded from those, are presented as samples.
