Kuwabara Shoten is a liquor store that has been family-run for generations. They used to run a kaku-uchi style pub (a liquor store in which you can drink alcohol you’ve bought) in a place once used as a warehouse, but in order to create somewhere the family could enjoy working, we redesigned it to be a unique place to enjoy alcohol while the architect took advantage of the building’s existing features. Since the family residence sits on the upper floors, the logo was made to not be a shop-like one, but instead based on the sense of this place that has been run here for generations. There was no creation of a symbol; the logo is a set of the store’s name and address. The façade uses neon tubes that give it a sense of presence without being too flashy, and the Maru Gothic font was used so that the logo can be reproduced as-is. At that point, we could see the direction going towards a visual identity centered on lettering, so we unified all POP displays, etc. with a common typeface. By doing so, we thought it would be possible to create atmosphere in the store without giving it a modeled sort of character. The POP displays are updated day by day as the number of products increases. For that reason, we set rules and developed them accordingly. Kuwabara Shoten’s VI is the lettering itself, so we design based on the idea that POP displays are also an important element of visual identity.
