72 Documentary fi lm, The Man Who Became a Camera: Photographer Takuma Nakahira(2003 / 91 min) Department of Photography KOHARA Masashi Born in Aichi in 1978. His documentary films include The Man Who Became a Camera (2003) about photographer NAKAHIRA Takuma. As a researcher at the Izu Photo Museum, KOHARA organized Nobuyoshi Araki Photobook Exhibition: Ararchy, Manabu Miyazaki: The Pencil of Nature, Tazuko Masuyama: Until Everything Becomes a Photograph among others. He is the author or co-author of Suspending Time: Life –Photography– Death, Visions of Fuji: An Incurable Malady of Modern Japan, War and Postwar: Images of Japan As Seen in Hodo Shashin (Reportage Photography) and Detective in the Forest among others. In the 1960s and 70s, NAKAHIRA Takuma led the ‘Season of Pol i t ics’ wi th his cutt ing-edge photography and textual work. However, he fel l i l l in 1977 due to acute alcohol ism. This resul ted in the loss of most of his memory as wel l as the f low of his words. Since then, photography has occupied most of his l i fe. This piece is a documentary based on 3 years of observat ion, fol lowing how he photographed the area around his home in Yokohama on a dai ly basis, and his journey back to Okinawa, as i f he were tracing backwards in his memory.
