74 Department of Photography KOBAYASHI Kisei Born in Nagano in 1968. Graduated from the Photographic Department of Tokyo Polytechnic University, Junior College Department. After working as a newspaper photographer he became independent in 1991. He frequently travels Asia to produce work. He recently began to photograph the religious ceremonies of Japan, and the Suwa area in Nagano – his hometown. He also writes travel journals, non-fiction and novels. His recent books include Shape of Love, Strange Festival of Japan, Bright After-image, and Primitive Cries in the Night. In 1997 he received the Newcomer’s Award at the Photographic Society of Japan Awards for DAYS ASIA, and in 2013 the 22nd Tadahiko Hayashi Award for Boat from Afar. His debut film work is Tooi&Masato. Tooi, whose father was a former Japanese holdout and whose mother was a Vietnamese descendent Thai, went to Japan at the age of 8, and took the name ‘Masato’. Later, the 28-year-old Masato, aspiring to become a photographer, visited Bangkok, Thai land and his birthplace, Udon Thani. The Tooi who was hidden within Masato quietly awakened. He traveled across the Mekong river, fol lowing the memory of his father. The autobiography of the photographer SETO Masato (who won the Kimura Ihei award) was made into a non- fiction fi lm. The first fi lm by KOBAYASHI Kisei, it was shot in Thai land, Laos and Fukushima, and narrated by TSURUTA Mayu.
