88 Department of Design ETO Takahiro The world contains many written characters, such as kanji, hiragana, the alphabet, and many others, and they all seem to be distinct, with no reference to one another. However, according to Mark CHANGIZI, the letters in the world are all the same and we write the same characters. Upon dismantling the characters of any country into their basic formal elements, all letters are made of formal elements that can be written with three strokes. And examining the frequency of the appearance of these forms, the result is almost identical to the visual feature patterns that humans use to discern things in real life. In other words, humans have created characters with the features they use as cues when they look at the world. The gaze towards nature and the gaze towards letters seem to have the same root. Thinking of this, an ordinary letter suddenly contains the after-image of an ancient landscape, which is fascinating. In this work I have used the formal elements of characters as motifs in an attempt to convert them into graphic art to gaze at, not letters to read. ARCHE graphic designer Born in Shizuoka in 1981.
